Selection Guidelines
Dental Dam
Our variety of dam materials ensure that the specific requirements of each clinical situation and treatment
procedure are successfully and effectively met. Elasticity, the ability to retract, thickness, color and
non-allergenic are relevant features to consider when choosing the most appropriate material
CLINICAL SITUATION

GINGIVAL STATUS
Athrophic or hypertrophic gingiva, i.e. thin, soft, dry or inflammatory conditions. Dental Dam retracation should not put too much stress on mucuosa and gingiva.
CLINICAL SITUATION

TOOTH CONDITION
Tooth may be decayed and enhanced retraction needed due to missing height of contour
DISPOSITION

ALLERGY
Patient and/ or dental staff may have allergic reactions to the proteins within latex
DISPOSITION

ANXIETY and/or PAIN SENSITIVITY
Patient has anxiety or claustrophobia and rejects the
application of Dental Dam.
CLINICAL PROCEDURES

ENDODONTICS
Endodontic procedures may use aggressive substances like NaOCL. Dental Dam material needs to be resistant upon contact.
CLINICAL PROCEDURES

RESTORATIVE PROCEDURES
For aesthetic results certain
contrast requirements
AGE

CHILD
First time application,
possible fear and anxiety.
Small(er) jaws
AGE

YOUNG/ADULT
Gingiva is firm (er)
AGE

OLD(ER)
Gingiva tends to be thinner,
softer and drier. Mucosa is
more vulnerable and
susceptible for mechanical
stimulus. Disposition for
latex allergy can be
elevated due to age.
